New Wearable Cameras Record Your Life — Then What?

CES 2026 brought a new wave of life-logging cameras promising to capture memories automatically. The real question is who controls that footage afterward.

The Promise: Every Moment, Preserved

At CES 2026, a new category of wearable product established itself as something more than a novelty concept: the AI-powered life-logging camera.

Two devices drew particular attention from attendees and tech publications.

The Looki L1 is a $199 clip-on camera positioned as the first “proactive AI” wearable device. The device is designed to switch recording modes and capture moments without user input — the on-device AI recognizes meaningful events and records them automatically. The marketing promise is that you can fully inhabit your experiences without worrying about whether you thought to press a button.

The LUCI Pin from Memories.ai occupies similar territory: a hands-free wearable camera that emphasizes local AI processing. Unlike some competitors, LUCI specifically markets itself around privacy — raw footage processes on a local hub owned by the user, rather than uploading to external servers. The company positions this as a direct response to concerns about where life-logging footage ends up.

Both devices address a genuine human desire. Meaningful moments pass continuously, and technology that promises to capture them automatically — without the friction of fumbling for a phone — has obvious appeal. The candid dinner laugh. The first steps. The unrepeatable landscape. The conversation you wish you could remember clearly.

The question that gets less attention in the product marketing is what happens to that footage after the moment it’s captured.

What Happened to the Last Generation of Life-Loggers

This is not the first time wearable life-logging cameras have been introduced as a consumer product category.

The most prominent recent example was Limitless — an AI pendant that recorded ambient audio throughout the day, making it possible to search and surface what you said in meetings, what commitments you made, what you were thinking about. The pendant had real-world use cases for people managing high volumes of information. Some users built meaningful personal memory systems around it.

On December 5, 2025, Meta acquired Limitless. The Limitless Pendant was immediately discontinued for new customers. By December 19, 2025, recording was shut off for existing users. Existing recordings remain accessible for a limited transition period — approximately one year — after which the infrastructure hosting them will be retired.

The personal audio memory archive that Limitless users built over months or years is now, in a practical sense, controlled by Meta. The company that made the acquisition makes its own decisions about what to do with the product, the data infrastructure, and the user recordings. The terms under which users originally entrusted their most intimate daily conversations to Limitless do not fully determine what happens to that data now.

This is not a story about bad actors. Meta did not acquire Limitless in order to misuse anyone’s personal audio archive. It’s a story about the standard mechanism of technology acquisitions: when you entrust personal data to a company, you are implicitly accepting that control of that company can change, and when it does, new owners make new choices.

The Limitless acquisition is the cautionary tale that should be running in the background of every evaluation of the CES 2026 life-logging devices.

The Bystander Privacy Problem

Most personal cloud storage raises privacy concerns that apply to you: your files, your photos, your data. Life-logging cameras raise a different category of concern — one that extends to everyone around you.

When you wear a camera that records continuously or semi-continuously, you are also recording:

  • Family members who live with you, who may have complex feelings about being filmed throughout the day
  • Friends and colleagues who didn’t agree to appear in your personal archive
  • Strangers in cafes, transit, and public spaces
  • Private conversations that participants had every reason to expect would remain private

Looki’s “Expo Mode” — which not only records but summarizes conversations and interactions using AI — has generated direct questions about what consent looks like when the AI is analyzing what other people said. The device captures their words; the AI processes and indexes them; the user has a searchable record of a conversation the other party may not have known was being archived.

This is not a narrowly technical problem. It is an ethical and increasingly legal one.

Some US states have two-party consent requirements for audio recording — both parties to a conversation must consent to being recorded. The legal analysis of when wearable recording falls under these statutes is not yet settled. The EU’s GDPR creates separate obligations around recording and storing identifiable individuals in many contexts. As the regulatory framework catches up to the technology, the legal landscape for life-logging cameras is likely to become more complex, not less.

On-Device AI vs. Local Storage: What the Marketing Usually Means

Both Looki and LUCI emphasize on-device or local AI processing as a privacy feature. This framing is meaningful — but it requires precise reading.

When a company says AI processing happens “on-device,” this typically refers to inference: the AI model that decides what to flag, tag, clip, or summarize runs on local hardware rather than being sent to cloud servers for processing. This is a legitimate privacy benefit. It means your raw footage isn’t being analyzed by a remote server; the analysis happens locally.

It does not necessarily mean the footage itself stays local.

These are separate questions:

Where does the processing happen? (The AI analysis — locally, or in the cloud?)

Where does the raw footage live? (The underlying video or audio — on the device, on a local hub, or on a cloud server?)

What gets uploaded, and when? (Clips selected by the AI? Metadata? Full raw footage synced to backup?)

Does the device work without a network connection and a cloud account?

The LUCI Pin is explicit that raw footage stays on a local hub the user owns — which is a stronger privacy claim than most competitors make. Looki’s documentation on cloud backup and footage storage is less explicit in the materials available at launch. For any device in this category, these questions deserve direct answers before purchase.

A device that processes locally but syncs footage to a cloud server for storage is offering a different privacy trade-off than one that keeps everything on local hardware. The marketing language often conflates the two.

The Acquisition Risk Is Real

The Limitless case illustrates a specific risk that isn’t about security vulnerabilities or data breaches. It’s about corporate ownership.

Life-logging footage — audio of your conversations, video of your daily life, AI-generated summaries of your routine — is among the most sensitive personal data imaginable. It’s more intimate than medical records in some respects, because it captures not just health events but the texture of daily life: what you talked about, who you were with, what you said in unguarded moments.

When this data lives on a startup’s infrastructure, the company’s financial trajectory determines its fate. Startups get acquired. Startups shut down. Startups pivot and abandon product lines.

The questions you should ask before choosing any life-logging device:

Who owns the company, and how financially stable are they? A venture-backed startup with ten employees faces different acquisition and shutdown risk than an established hardware company.

What is the explicit policy if the company is acquired or shuts down? Look for contractual commitments, not just marketing promises. Does the company commit to giving users data export access for a specific period? Does it commit to notifying users before shutting down infrastructure?

Where does your footage actually live? If it lives on a cloud server operated by the company, an acquisition or bankruptcy affects your access. If it lives on hardware you own, you retain physical custody regardless of what happens to the company.

Is there an export mechanism? Can you download all your footage in a usable format? If so, can you do it in bulk, or only clip by clip?

A Framework for Thinking About Life-Logging Devices

For people genuinely interested in this product category — and the use cases are real — here is a more structured way to evaluate the options.

Prioritize Local Storage Over Cloud Storage

A device that stores footage on hardware you own — even if AI processing requires cloud connectivity for some features — gives you physical custody of the archive. That custody persists regardless of what happens to the company.

The LUCI Pin’s local hub model is specifically designed around this principle. Devices that default to cloud storage require you to trust not just the current company but whoever might own it in the future.

Treat the Recording as an Explicit Act

Both Looki and LUCI offer “proactive” or “automatic” capture modes where the AI decides what to record. These modes maximize the volume of captured moments but minimize deliberateness.

A more selective approach — where you initiate recording for specific moments rather than having the device record continuously — requires more attention but produces a more curated archive, creates fewer bystander recording incidents, and generates less footage that needs to be stored, processed, and eventually deleted.

Keep the Archive Separate from the Device Ecosystem

The footage your camera captures is raw material. How you archive the results of that capture should be your decision, not determined by which cloud the manufacturer defaults to.

Exporting clips to a private storage service you control — rather than leaving the archive in the manufacturer’s cloud — keeps your personal memory archive under your control regardless of what happens to the device company. This is the same principle that applies to photos: the images you take with your phone belong in storage you control, not exclusively in the phone manufacturer’s cloud.

Brief the People You’re Around

Before wearing a life-logging camera around friends, colleagues, or family members, tell them you’re doing it. For devices with audio recording, this is often a legal requirement depending on your jurisdiction. But beyond legality, it’s a reasonable courtesy and reduces the likelihood that someone feels surveilled by a device they didn’t know existed.

Memory Worth Keeping Is Memory You Control

The CES 2026 wave of life-logging cameras represents a genuine advance in the technology for capturing daily life. The hardware is smaller. The AI is more capable. The privacy-first framing — particularly from devices like LUCI that explicitly emphasize local processing — reflects awareness of the concerns raised by earlier generations of this product.

What the industry hasn’t fully solved is the long-term custody question. Who owns the archive of your daily life five years from now? What happens to it if the company running the infrastructure gets acquired, goes bankrupt, or decides to pivot? What rights do the people captured in that archive — family members, friends, colleagues, strangers — have over their appearance in it?

These questions don’t have industry-wide answers yet. Individual companies are making individual choices, and users are implicitly accepting those choices by purchasing the devices.

The Limitless acquisition is recent enough that it should inform those choices. A personal memory archive built on third-party infrastructure is subject to whatever decisions the third party makes, now and in the future.

The most durable approach to personal memory capture — whether through a wearable camera, a phone, a voice recorder, or any other device — is to keep the final archive on infrastructure you control. Not on the manufacturer’s servers. Not in a cloud account that could be inherited by an acquirer. On storage where you hold the keys and the data.

That doesn’t require building a home server or mastering encryption protocols. It requires using storage where the privacy terms are explicit, the data stays yours, and you control what happens to it if you ever decide to leave.
