Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series shipped with a meaningful change to how AI works with your photos: Gemini is now integrated directly into the Gallery app, with the ability to access your photo library to answer questions, generate content, and assist with organizing and editing. For users who’ve never looked at what Galaxy AI can access or send to the cloud, the S26 represents a useful moment to review.
This post covers what Galaxy AI’s photo features actually access, which features run locally versus in the cloud, and the settings worth reviewing on any recent Galaxy device.
What’s New: Gemini in Gallery
Previous Galaxy AI photo features — including Photo Assist, Generative Edit, and the original AI gallery tools — operated as discrete features with individual permission requirements. The S26 changes this by integrating Gemini more deeply into Gallery’s core interface.
Gemini Intelligence arriving through One UI 8.5 allows the AI to access information from your Gallery library to fill in details on your behalf. In practice this means you can ask Gemini natural language questions about your photos (“when did I last go to the beach?”, “who else was at this event?”) and it draws on your photo library — including metadata, faces, and scene content — to answer.
This is a fundamentally different relationship between an AI assistant and your photo library than “press a button to apply a filter.” It’s a standing query interface into your stored memories, with Google’s Gemini model as the processing layer.
Samsung’s implementation requires explicit approval before Gemini can access Gallery data through what they call the Extensions system. But explicit approval during setup is a one-time interaction that many users grant without fully understanding the scope of what they’re enabling — and the scope here is your entire photo library, not a specific photo.
On-Device vs. Cloud: Where Processing Actually Happens
Galaxy AI features split into two categories based on where the computation runs, and understanding which is which affects how you think about privacy:
On-device features process data using the phone’s own processor, within the device’s security boundary. Samsung’s Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection applies here — each application’s data is encrypted individually. No image data leaves the device for these features.
On-device Galaxy AI photo features include:
- Basic scene and object detection
- On-device face grouping (local to your gallery)
- Audio Eraser (removes background noise from videos)
- Drawing Assist
- Bixby Vision object identification (the basic version)
Cloud-dependent features require a network connection and send data to Samsung or Google servers for processing. These include the most powerful — and most privacy-relevant — capabilities:
- Generative Edit (removing objects from photos, replacing backgrounds with AI-generated content) requires a network connection and Samsung Account login. Images or portions of images are sent to Samsung’s servers for processing.
- Gemini questions about your photo library use Google’s Gemini model, meaning queries and relevant photo metadata are processed within Google’s infrastructure, subject to Google’s privacy policy for Gemini.
- AI-generated “highlights” and memory summaries pull from your library and are processed through cloud services.
Samsung provides a master privacy toggle at Settings > Galaxy AI that forces all Galaxy AI processing on-device, disabling cloud-dependent features entirely. Enabling it doesn’t degrade on-device features — those continue working. It does disable Generative Edit, Gemini library queries, and other cloud-reliant capabilities.
What Data Leaves Your Phone for Each Feature
For the features most likely to involve personal photos, here’s what the data flow looks like:
Generative Edit. When you use Generative Edit to remove a person from a photo or fill in a background, a portion of the image — typically a cropped region including context — is sent to Samsung’s servers. Samsung processes this to generate the AI fill and returns the result. According to Samsung’s documentation, this data is not retained for training purposes on personal accounts. The image or crop is transmitted in the clear to Samsung’s processing infrastructure unless you’ve enabled additional protections.
Gemini photo queries. When you ask Gemini a question that draws on your Gallery, the query and relevant photo metadata (or in some cases a representative image or thumbnail) are processed within Google’s Gemini infrastructure. This means the data is subject to Google’s terms for Gemini, including Google’s policies on what gets retained, used for model improvement, and how long conversation context is stored.
Samsung and Google have separate privacy policies that govern each part of this pipeline. If you’re using Gemini features on a Galaxy device, you’re operating within both privacy frameworks simultaneously — Samsung’s for the device and Gallery integration, Google’s for Gemini’s processing.
Photo sharing and saving to cloud. When you save an edited photo or a Gemini-generated image to your library, it syncs to whatever backup service you use (Samsung Cloud, Google Photos, OneDrive). Each of those has its own privacy implications separate from the Galaxy AI features.
The New Privacy Features on S26
Samsung added privacy-specific features to the S26 worth knowing about:
Privacy Alerts. Uses on-device machine learning to notify you proactively when apps attempt to access sensitive data (precise location, call logs, camera, microphone) in ways that seem unnecessary or anomalous. This is a passive monitoring feature, not a blocking one — it tells you what happened, doesn’t prevent it.
Private Album in Gallery. Lets you hide selected photos and videos within Gallery, protected by the device’s biometric lock. This is local protection — it affects what’s visible within the Gallery app, not what’s backed up or synced to cloud services. Photos in Private Album are still included in cloud backup unless you’ve explicitly excluded them from backup.
Privacy Display (S26 Ultra). A screen filter that prevents people next to you from seeing your display at sharp angles. Useful for viewing private photos in public but unrelated to data collection or transmission.
Galaxy AI master toggle. As described above — Settings > Galaxy AI to force all processing on-device.
Settings Worth Reviewing on Any Galaxy Device
If you have a Galaxy device with Galaxy AI features — not just the S26 — a few settings are worth checking:
Settings > Galaxy AI > Process Galaxy AI data on-device only. Enable this if you want to prevent cloud processing. You’ll lose access to Generative Edit and Gemini library queries, but retain on-device AI features.
Settings > Apps > Gemini. Review what permissions Gemini has been granted, including access to Gallery and Files. If you don’t want Gemini to access your photo library, this is where you revoke the permission.
Gallery app > Settings > Backup and sync. Understand what’s backing up and to where. Private Album contents may or may not be excluded from backup depending on your settings — verify this explicitly.
Google account settings > Data & privacy > Gemini Apps. If you use Gemini on your Galaxy device, Google’s Gemini Activity setting determines how your interactions with Gemini are stored and used. Review whether activity is being saved, and for how long.
Samsung account > Privacy > Privacy dashboard. Shows what data Samsung has associated with your account, including any data generated by Galaxy AI features.
The Permission You May Not Have Considered
The most significant privacy consideration with Gemini’s Gallery integration isn’t any single feature — it’s the access scope.
When Gemini is granted access to your Gallery, it has query access to your entire photo library. That’s not a specific album or a set of photos you’ve designated; it’s the full archive. If you’ve been backing up photos to your phone for years, the scope of what Gemini can draw on is everything from this morning’s camera roll back to photos you took when you first got a smartphone.
Most people have never thought about their full photo library as a coherent dataset that someone (or something) can query. But that’s what it is from Gemini’s perspective: a structured record of where you’ve been, who you know, what you look like, what events you’ve attended, and what patterns your life follows over time.
The question worth asking is not “is this feature useful?” — it often is — but “am I comfortable with a cloud-hosted AI model having query access to this entire record?” That’s a different and more significant permission than “can this app access my photos.”
Samsung vs. Google: Whose Privacy Policy Applies?
When you use Gemini features on a Galaxy device, both Samsung and Google are involved in processing your data, and their privacy policies are separate:
Samsung’s policy governs what happens at the device and Samsung Account level, including how Samsung handles data generated by Galaxy AI features, what’s stored on Samsung’s servers, and Samsung’s commitments on not selling data.
Google’s policy governs what happens when Gemini processes your queries and photo data through Google’s infrastructure. This includes Google’s standard Gemini data handling — including how long conversation history is retained, whether it’s used for model improvement (with controls available in your Google account settings), and what Google can do with the data under its terms.
You’re agreeing to both when you use Gemini on Galaxy. Review both policies if you want a complete picture.
On-Device AI Is Improving, But Not There Yet
Samsung’s commitment to providing an on-device processing option is genuine — the Galaxy AI master toggle works, and on-device features continue working with it enabled. But the most capable features, particularly Generative Edit and Gemini’s natural language photo queries, require cloud processing and cannot be replicated with current on-device hardware.
This is where the practical tension lies. The AI features users most want — powerful object removal, smart answers about their photo history — are the ones that require sending data to cloud infrastructure. The features that run entirely on-device are the ones that most users wouldn’t call AI at all: basic scene detection, object ID for accessibility, standard image processing.
That gap will likely narrow over time as mobile processor capabilities increase. For now, using the most powerful Galaxy AI photo features means accepting cloud processing of image data under Samsung and Google’s respective privacy frameworks.
What This Means for Your Photo Archive
Your photo archive represents a uniquely personal and sensitive record. The photos spanning years of your life contain more information about you — your relationships, health, travel, and daily patterns — than most other data types.
The Galaxy S26’s Gemini Gallery integration is a meaningful convenience feature. Natural language search across your photo history is genuinely useful. So is powerful AI-assisted editing. The trade-off is that realizing those benefits means routing that archive through cloud AI infrastructure, with the attendant questions about data handling, retention, and the expansion of what’s possible if that data is ever accessed or compelled.
Making that trade-off deliberately, with a clear picture of which features use the cloud and under whose privacy policy, is more valuable than either embracing every feature by default or refusing all of them. The settings reviewed above give you meaningful control; using them is the part that’s up to you.
For memories and files where you need “store and don’t analyze,” a service without an AI-processing layer is a different category of answer — not a toggle on top of the same infrastructure.
