The pitch for pet GPS trackers is genuinely compelling: a small device on your dog’s collar that tells you exactly where they are, alerts you if they escape the garden, and shows you how far they’ve walked today. For pet owners, the peace of mind has real value. Millions of these devices are now in use worldwide.
What the marketing rarely emphasises is what’s on the other side of that real-time location data — the company’s servers, its privacy policy, its commercial partnerships, and the trail of inferences that can be drawn from tracking a dog’s daily life.
Your dog doesn’t commute. They sleep at your home. They wake up at your home. They walk the same routes your household walks. A GPS tracker on your pet is, in practice, a continuous location logger for your household — one worn by an entity that hasn’t read the terms of service.
What Pet Tracker Companies Actually Collect
The data collection in pet GPS devices goes beyond location coordinates.
Continuous GPS traces. Devices like Tractive GPS, the Fi Series 3 collar, and Whistle Health GPS track your pet’s location continuously — not just when you check the app, but in the background, on a schedule that can be as frequent as every few seconds in “live tracking” mode. Over weeks and months, this builds a precise map of every address your pet visits, every route they walk, and how often.
Activity and health data. Most premium trackers now include accelerometers and in some cases heart rate monitoring. Whistle’s health tracker claims to detect signs of anxiety, changes in sleep patterns, and abnormal scratching. Fi’s activity features log sleep duration, daily step counts, and “rest” versus “active” time. This health data is stored on company servers and associated with your account.
Behavioural inference. Some platforms derive secondary inferences from raw data: “wellness scores,” “anxiety indicators,” or “breed benchmark comparisons” that compare your pet against aggregated data from other users’ pets of the same breed. These features require your pet’s data to flow into a model trained on the entire user base.
Owner-linked data. Pet tracker accounts are linked to your identity — your name, email, payment information, home address (often required for subscription management or vet record features), and phone number. The GPS data is not just “a dog’s location” in the abstract — it’s your dog’s location, linked to your account.
Home Address Inference Is Trivial
You don’t have to read a pet tracker’s location data carefully to understand where the owner lives. The location cluster where the pet spends every night, and most of the day, is the home address — with a precision that makes the inference essentially certain.
This is a known privacy risk with any continuous location tracker. The reason it matters specifically for pet trackers is that many users don’t mentally categorise them as location devices that reveal their own whereabouts. They categorise them as pet safety tools.
From a data analysis perspective, there is no meaningful distinction. A pet tracker that knows your dog sleeps at a specific address every night knows your home address. A tracker that shows your dog walks the same loop every morning knows your daily routine. A tracker that shows your dog spending time at a non-home address regularly has inferred your work location, your partner’s home, your regular visits to a family member’s house.
Location data linked to your identity has serious downstream implications. It is valuable to data brokers. It is sought by law enforcement with appropriate legal process. It was used in multiple domestic violence cases where a tracker on a pet was used by an abusive former partner to locate a victim.
What the Privacy Policies Say
Tractive’s privacy policy, as of 2026, states that it collects “GPS position data” and may share it with “service providers” for platform operation and, in anonymised form, for “research and analytics.” The policy does not specify what “anonymised” means in practice or how re-identification is prevented.
Fi’s privacy policy permits the collection of “pet location and activity data” and its use “to improve our products and services.” The policy includes a third-party sharing clause covering “business partners” for “joint marketing” — a standard phrase that, in practice, means your aggregated data profile can be shared with companies whose products are co-marketed by Fi.
Whistle, owned by Mars Petcare since 2018, operates under a privacy policy that permits sharing data with “affiliated companies” — which includes the broader Mars corporate family, a €45 billion conglomerate with interests in pet food, veterinary services, and health research. Exactly how Whistle’s pet health and location data flows through that corporate structure is not specified.
None of these policies are unusually bad by tech industry standards. They are, however, policies that most buyers haven’t read before attaching the device to their pet’s collar.
The Veterinary Data Angle
Several premium pet trackers now advertise features that integrate with veterinary care: sharing health data with your vet, tracking medication compliance, monitoring recovery from surgery. Whistle Health and Tractive’s premium tier both offer vet-sharing features.
Health data for animals is not subject to HIPAA in the United States — HIPAA covers human medical records. Veterinary records and pet health data collected by tracking devices exist in a regulatory gap: they’re not protected medical information under US law.
This matters because pet health data that correlates with owner lifestyle and behaviour — sleep patterns, anxiety indicators linked to household disruption, activity changes that suggest owner work schedule shifts — has commercial value. Veterinary data aggregated across millions of pets has epidemiological research value. The companies that collect this data have broad latitude in what they can do with it.
Law Enforcement and Domestic Safety
GPS data from pet trackers has appeared in law enforcement contexts. In documented cases in the US, police have subpoenaed location data from pet tracking services as part of investigations involving whereabouts — the same way they subpoena smartphone location data or vehicle GPS records.
The reverse situation — a stalker or abusive ex-partner using a pet tracker to locate a victim — has also been documented. The same features that let a concerned pet owner check where their dog is from the office can be exploited by anyone with access to the account. If you share pet tracker access with a partner and subsequently leave that relationship, ensuring account access is revoked should be on the same checklist as changing home passwords and reviewing shared app accounts.
If you’re concerned about tracker misuse, check whether your pet tracker supports “trusted contacts” — a feature on some devices that shows you who has access to your pet’s location. Revoke access for anyone who shouldn’t have it.

Everything Furbo’s camera captures — your home interior, the people who enter, ambient conversations — is uploaded to Furbo’s cloud servers. Furbo’s privacy policy permits using footage for platform improvement and employs a “barking alert” AI that analyses audio from your home.
Smart cat doors and pet barriers log every time your pet moves between spaces, creating a secondary timeline of household activity.
None of these individually is a major data breach. Collectively, a household using a pet GPS tracker, a smart feeder, and an indoor pet camera has deployed a fairly comprehensive home monitoring infrastructure — whose footage and data is stored on third-party servers, governed by terms the user probably hasn’t read, and potentially accessible to law enforcement, commercial partners, and, in the event of a breach, attackers.
Steps to Limit Exposure
Audit your account access settings. Every pet tracker that supports shared access should have a list of who can see your pet’s location. Review it and remove anyone who no longer needs access.
Disable live tracking when not needed. Live tracking mode — where location updates every few seconds — is the feature most users turn on in a panic when their pet is missing, then forget to turn off. Running in standard mode (location updates every few minutes) uses less battery and logs less fine-grained data.
Read the data sharing settings. Most pet tracker apps have settings related to data sharing, research participation, and marketing. These are typically opt-in features that are enabled by default. Disabling them limits the categories of use to which your data can be put.
Check what data you can download and delete. Some pet trackers offer account data export or deletion. Knowing whether you can delete historical location traces before closing an account is worth finding out before the data accumulates.
Consider whether the cloud features are necessary. Basic pet GPS trackers that store data locally — syncing to your phone without cloud intermediation — exist as alternatives to subscription-based cloud services. They’re less convenient but don’t involve third-party data retention.
The Fundamental Mismatch
Pet tracker companies are excellent at communicating the benefits of their products and genuinely poor at communicating the data implications. The device that tells you where your dog is also tells the company where you live, when you’re home, and what your daily routine looks like.
That’s not a reason to never use a pet tracker. It’s a reason to know what you’re using before you put it on your dog’s collar — and to read the privacy policy with the same scepticism you’d apply to any other service that monitors your location continuously.
