What Your Kindle Knows About You

Every page turn, highlight, and reading pause is logged and synced to Amazon's servers. What your e-reader tracks, and why it matters.

The book you are reading on a Kindle knows more about how you read than any physical book could. Every time you turn a page, it is logged. Every passage you highlight is stored and synced to Amazon’s cloud. When you stop reading and for how long — tracked. How long you spent on each chapter — recorded. Whether you opened the book today or abandoned it three weeks ago — noted.

This data is transmitted to Amazon’s servers and linked to your Amazon account. Amazon’s privacy policy discloses that it collects information about your use of its devices and services, including Kindle devices and apps. The question is whether readers understand what that means in practice, and what Amazon does with the resulting data.


What Gets Collected

Reading Behaviour

The most granular layer of Kindle data covers how you read: how fast you turn pages, which sections you linger on, where you slow down, and where you speed up. Amazon uses this to power the “Time to Read” feature — the estimate of how long it will take you to finish a chapter or book, based on your personal reading pace. That function works because Amazon has been logging your reading speed across every book you’ve read on the device.

Highlights and Notes

When you highlight a passage or add a note, it is stored in Amazon’s cloud and synced across your devices. This is how highlights appear on your phone after you’ve been reading on your Kindle. The data is attached to your account.

Amazon has used aggregate highlight data publicly — the “Most Highlighted Passages” feature in the Kindle Store shows which passages from popular books have been highlighted most often. Individual highlight data is what makes the aggregate possible.

Books Opened vs. Books Completed

Publishers can, through their agreements with Amazon, access aggregate data on reader completion rates — what percentage of readers finish a given book, where readers typically stop. Amazon provides this in aggregated, anonymised form. The underlying individual reading data is what generates the aggregate.

Cross-Device Sync Data

Because Kindle syncs across devices, Amazon knows your last reading position in every book, on every device you’ve used. The sync is a product feature. The data it requires is a continuous log of your reading activity.

App Reading Data

The Kindle app on your phone or tablet generates the same categories of data as the physical device. Reading on iOS or Android through the Kindle app does not create a privacy boundary — the data flows to Amazon’s servers in the same way.


The AI Reading Assistant

Amazon’s recent AI features have deepened the relationship between reading data and AI systems.

The Kindle AI Assistant provides summaries, character lookups, and contextual questions within books. Using this feature sends queries about book content to Amazon’s servers. The context required to generate a useful response may include information about your position in the book and what you’ve highlighted — meaning your AI assistant interaction data is an additional layer of reading-related information beyond basic behavioural tracking.

Amazon’s AI roadmap for Kindle includes more personalised reading recommendations generated from granular reading behaviour data. The more reading data the system has, the more personalised the output. From Amazon’s perspective, this is a user benefit. It also means reading data is more directly connected to AI model inputs than it was in earlier Kindle generations.


Reading as Sensitive Data

Reading habits are a specific category of personal data with a distinct privacy history. Librarians have a long tradition of protecting patron reading records. Library associations in the United States have fought against law enforcement requests for patron data, and many states have specific statutes protecting library records from disclosure.

That tradition emerged from a recognition that what people read reveals what they’re thinking about, worried about, curious about, or working through. Reading records are, in a meaningful sense, a record of intellectual and personal life.

E-books are not governed by the same norms or legal protections as library records. When you buy and read an e-book on a Kindle, your reading data falls under Amazon’s data practices, not the privacy framework governing libraries.

What you read — medical information about a condition you’re researching, religious or political content, personal development books, books about relationships or identity — is information you may consider private. Whether it should be stored indefinitely in Amazon’s systems, associated with your account and purchase history, is a distinct question from whether Kindle Sync is convenient.


What Amazon Does With the Data

Product Improvement

Amazon explicitly states in its documentation that it uses reading data to improve Kindle features. The Time to Read feature, recommendations, and Kindle Unlimited decisions about which titles to promote depend on reading behaviour data.

AI Training

Amazon’s privacy documentation states that users can opt out of their data being used for research and product improvement purposes. The default is opt-in. Whether reading data contributes to the training of Amazon’s large language models — used in Alexa, the Kindle AI assistant, and Amazon’s broader AI products — is not explicitly addressed in the terms in a way that provides clear certainty.

Publisher Data Sharing

Publishers receive aggregate, de-identified completion and engagement data for their titles. Individual reading records are not shared with publishers in identified form. The de-identification standard applied to that data — and how meaningful it is given the specificity of reading behaviour across thousands of users — is not detailed in Amazon’s documentation.

Amazon complies with valid legal demands for user data. A request for an individual’s Kindle reading history would be covered by Amazon’s data retention. In the United States, reading records held by a commercial company receive materially weaker legal protections than library records. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act and subsequent frameworks do not treat commercial reading records with the same protection that many states extend to library patron records.


Your Options

Turn Off Whispersync

Whispersync is the feature that syncs your reading position and highlights across devices. Disabling it — in Settings > Account > Whispersync for Books — stops position and highlight data from syncing to Amazon’s servers. You lose cross-device sync but reduce the data being continuously transmitted.

Opt Out of Research and Analytics Data

In Kindle settings, you can limit Amazon’s use of device data for research and analytics purposes. Go to All Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Privacy. This limits some data uses but does not prevent all data collection associated with your account.

Export and Own Your Annotations

You can export your Kindle highlights and notes from your Amazon account. If you want a private record of what you’ve highlighted and noted across your reading, keeping a local copy or a copy in your own storage — rather than depending exclusively on Amazon’s cloud — means you have a record that persists regardless of account changes or platform decisions.

Consider Your Privacy Tier

For reading you consider particularly private — medical research, content on sensitive personal topics, anything where your reading choices themselves are sensitive — the most complete solution is a physical book or an e-reader that doesn’t require a cloud account. Kobo devices can be used with library titles via the Libby integration with less full-account cloud integration; open-format e-readers exist that support sideloaded books without account requirements.

For everyday reading where the convenience of cloud sync and large catalogue matter, understanding the data trade-off and using the available privacy settings is the realistic middle ground.


The Inventory Problem

There is a secondary issue worth noting: Amazon’s record of your Kindle purchases and downloads is a complete inventory of your reading history going back as far as you’ve had the account. This isn’t just behavioural data — it is a categorised record of every book you’ve bought or borrowed.

For many people that record is unremarkable. For others — depending on what they read, why they read it, and what that list would reveal — it’s a record they might prefer didn’t exist in a form accessible to Amazon, its partners, and anyone who might legally demand it.

Physical books purchased with cash leave no such record. The convenience of digital purchasing comes with a reading inventory that wasn’t part of the deal when print was the only option.


A Note on the Trade-Off

The Kindle is a genuinely useful reading device. The convenience is real: an entire library in your bag, instant dictionary access, adjustable type, highlighted passages synced across devices. What it costs is a continuous log of your reading life associated with one of the world’s largest data-collecting companies.

That trade-off is worth making consciously. Most readers haven’t considered it — the reading experience is private and interior; the data infrastructure behind it is neither. The practices described here aren’t unusual for Amazon; they are the standard operating conditions of using a connected consumer device.

If you value your reading privacy, the practical steps above can meaningfully reduce the data collected. For reading that’s genuinely sensitive, physical books remain the most private option available.
