In late 2024 and throughout 2025, Google rolled out a significant change to how Google Maps Timeline works. Previously, your location history was stored on Google’s servers and viewable from any browser at maps.google.com/timeline. Now, it’s stored on your phone — specifically, only on the device where Timeline is enabled.
Google framed this as a privacy improvement, and in one important way, it is. But the change also introduced new trade-offs that aren’t obvious from the setting toggle, and understanding them is worth the five minutes it takes.
What Google Maps Timeline Actually Is
If you’ve ever used Google Maps on your phone, you’ve probably seen Timeline: the feature that shows a day-by-day log of where you’ve been, complete with inferred place names, routes traveled, and estimated time at each location.
Timeline is built from Location History, a Google Account setting that, when enabled, instructs your device to periodically send your GPS coordinates to Google. Over months and years, this produces a remarkably detailed record of where you’ve lived, worked, traveled, eaten, received medical care, and spent time with other people.
The record is, by design, comprehensive. That’s the point. Timeline’s value proposition is that you can look back and remember where you were on any given date — which restaurant you visited three months ago, which city you were in during a work trip two years back, which neighborhood you spent a lot of time in during a particular period of your life.
That comprehensiveness is also why the data practices around Timeline matter more than they might for a simpler feature.
What Changed and Why
Google announced the Timeline change as a privacy improvement centered on a specific legal and technical problem: geofence warrants.
Law enforcement agencies in the US had been using geofence warrants — legal orders requiring Google to produce location data for all devices that were in a specific geographic area during a specific time window — as an investigative tool. Google received hundreds of these requests per year. The warrant didn’t require suspicion about any individual person; it required only that Google had location data for devices in a given area.
By moving Timeline data off Google’s servers and onto individual devices, Google eliminated most of this exposure. If Timeline data isn’t on Google’s servers, Google can’t produce it in response to a geofence warrant. The legal architecture of the warrant becomes ineffective when the data isn’t where the warrant can reach it.
This is a meaningful structural change. It’s not a marginal privacy improvement — it changes the threat model for anyone who uses Timeline.
What “On-Device” Actually Means
When Google says Timeline is now stored on-device, it means your location history lives in local storage on your phone, not in your Google Account on Google’s servers.
Several practical consequences follow from this:
Web access is gone. The maps.google.com/timeline interface that let you browse your history from a browser is no longer functional for new data. Timeline is now phone-specific. If you want to see your history, you open Google Maps on your phone.
Your history is tied to that one device. If you have two phones signed into the same Google Account, Timeline doesn’t sync between them. Each device builds its own local history independently. You can’t get a combined view.
Losing your phone can mean losing your history. If your phone is stolen, damaged, or factory reset, and you haven’t enabled Timeline backup, that history is gone. Google can’t recover it from the server side because Google doesn’t have it.
The Backup Option — and Why You Have to Opt In
Google built a backup mechanism for Timeline data to address the “lost phone” scenario. It works like this: you can opt in to having an encrypted copy of your Timeline backed up to Google’s servers. When you switch to a new device and sign in with your Google Account, that backup can be restored.
The key detail is that backup is opt-in, not default.
This is the right privacy default — the data is on your device by default, not Google’s servers. But it means that if you never touched the backup setting and you lose your phone, your Timeline history doesn’t automatically restore when you set up a new device.
If Timeline history matters to you — as a memory tool, for mileage tracking, for any other reason — check whether backup is enabled. The setting is inside Google Maps under your profile, Timeline settings.
The Auto-Delete Default Also Changed
Alongside the on-device move, Google changed the default auto-delete setting for Location History. The new default is three months.
If you’ve been using Timeline for years and never changed your auto-delete setting, you may have already lost older data. When Google made this change, users who had Location History turned on without an explicitly set retention period were transitioned to the three-month default — meaning data older than three months may have been automatically deleted.
The available options are: 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or keep until you delete it manually. You can change this in your Google Maps Timeline settings.
If you want your history to extend beyond three months, you need to actively change this setting. The three-month default exists because Google determined it represents a reasonable balance between utility and data minimization, but it may not be the setting you’d choose if you thought about it deliberately.
What Your Timeline Data Reveals
It’s worth being clear-eyed about what years of Timeline data contains, especially before you think about backup settings or export options.
Timeline data, at the granularity Google collects it, can reveal:
Your daily routine: Your home address, your workplace, the route between them, what time you typically leave and arrive, and deviations from that pattern.
Medical information: The hospitals, clinics, specialist offices, and health facilities you’ve visited. Google already has policy language about handling visits to particularly sensitive locations like reproductive health clinics, counseling centers, and domestic violence shelters — these get auto-deleted from Timeline shortly after detection. But that auto-deletion policy doesn’t cover every category of sensitive medical visit.
Religious and political activity: Places of worship, community organization offices, political events, and other gatherings you attended.
Your social graph: By inference — if you’re at the same location as another person with Location History enabled at the same time, on repeated occasions, your respective histories can establish a relationship even if you’ve never communicated through Google.
Travel history: Flights, hotels, cities visited, and how long you stayed.
This data is worth understanding regardless of the legal-access question. Even with the geofence warrant exposure removed, Timeline is one of the more intimate records of your behavior that a tech platform maintains.
Practical Steps to Take Right Now
Check whether Timeline is on. Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, tap Your Timeline. If you see a log of recent locations, it’s active. If you’ve never used this feature, it may be off.
Set your auto-delete preference deliberately. Inside Timeline settings, find the auto-delete option. Choose the retention period that reflects how long you actually want this data kept, not just the default.
Decide on backup. If you’d want your history restored if you changed phones, enable the encrypted backup. If you’d prefer your history not exist on Google’s servers at all under any circumstances, leave backup off — and know that means your history lives only on your phone.
Export before you change settings. If you’re thinking about deleting your history or turning off Timeline, you can export it first from Google Takeout (takeout.google.com). The export includes JSON files with timestamped location data. Keep in mind this file is a detailed location record and should be stored somewhere secure.
Consider turning it off entirely. If you don’t use Timeline and didn’t know it was on, turning off Location History is a clean option. Your maps app will still work; it just won’t build a historical record. The toggle is in Google Maps settings under Your Timeline.
The Separate Question of What Google Does With Location Data
Moving Timeline to your device doesn’t mean Google collects no location data. Google Maps uses your current location for navigation and local search. That present-location data is separate from Timeline’s historical record.
Google’s broader location data practices — including how location is used in advertising, what signals advertisers receive, and how location inferences are built from activity across Google services — are governed by separate policies and weren’t changed by the Timeline update.
The geofence warrant vulnerability was closed. The advertising data picture wasn’t.
What Alternatives Look Like
For users who want a record of where they’ve been without it living in a Google account, the options are sparse but exist.
Offline journal apps with manual location tagging provide control at the cost of automation — you record where you are rather than having it tracked continuously.
Open-source location logging apps like Overland (iOS) or OwnTracks log GPS data to a server you control. Setup is technical, but the data never touches a third-party server.
Photo EXIF data is a rough location record — if you take photos throughout your day, the GPS coordinates embedded in those photos (assuming you allow the camera app to access location) create a partial timeline of where you were. This data lives in your photos rather than in a Google account.

The Timeline change is genuinely positive for privacy. Moving location history off Google’s servers to your device, eliminating the geofence warrant exposure, and defaulting to a three-month auto-delete are steps in a sensible direction.
They don’t change the broader picture of what Timeline data is — an intimate, comprehensive record of your physical movements — or the question of whether you want that record kept at all.
Check your settings. Make the choices deliberately. And know what you’re keeping.
